The Legacy of Steve Jobs

I spent this morning, like most mornings, parked in from of my computer. Except this morning, I had a plan to do one thing before anything else.

I sat at my iMac desktop and typed in: "Steve Jobs." Before yesterday, I didn't exactly know who Steve Jobs was. Before yesterday, I didn't know he was even ill, or the mastermind behind my most favorite possessions or my kid's favorite cartoons. Before yesterday, I didn't know how much he would change my life.

This morning, I sit in front of my iMac desktop, and watch videos of his motivational speeches. Particularly one from 2005, at Stanford University. Where most of the infamous quotes he is known for were excerpts from that speech. I hang on to each words, as if he was speaking directly to me.

"Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle."

Is it just me, or did this year go by so quickly?

I can't believe its fall already. Time to tuck away the cute sandals and sundress, and trade them in for boots and scarves. I don't mind though. Fall season is actually very beautiful out here. You know, during the 3 weeks we have of it to enjoy. ;) It's only a matter of time until everything in sight is covered in a blanket of white, so I intend to enjoy all the color while it's still visible!

This will be my family's last Autumn in Alaska, and I have yet to photograph my own children in the beautiful leaves. I hope I have some images to share of them in a later blog post. That's just something I cannot miss out on.

Newbie Session | Gabrielle

I think one of the perks of this job is having these beautiful newborns to coddle anytime Baby Fever seems to hit me; and it hits me a lot more often these days, especially with my youngest turning 3 in a few weeks.

Baby Gabrielle was just what the doctored ordered. The sweetness of a baby girl in the studio was more than enough for me to be good for another month or so. Mom and Dad were a direct correlation of her. They were the most patient and helpful throughout the session. Hands on and both participant during the entire process. Chatting candidly between feedings and laughing with each leak or surprise the little one had for us. Only things that make Newborn Sessions much more interesting, of course. ;)

Often times I work with military families, they request certain things to be incorporated into their sessions. The American Flag photographed in these images of Baby Gabrielle was once flown high above the Capitol Building. A strong display of pride for her daddy and the country he serves.

Personal | with Tori Spelling

During one of our candid and random conversations on a car ride to pick up pizzas for our kids, a good friend and I were discussing Tori Spelling's Facebook Page and recent pregnancy. Yes, Miss Donna Martin herself has a Facebook Profile!

Who knows if it's really her, her assistant, or friend that updates her status, but with each one there is this specific person that always has something snarky and negative to say to her. Whether it's saying she's ugly, a home wrecker, or her husband is going to leave her, this anonymous person makes it a point in her day to come up with the ugliest things to say in hopes to bring Tori Spelling down.

Do these negative comment hinder Tori from selling books, creating hit tv shows, enjoying her life, or even getting out of bed in the morning? I seriously doubt that. If I'm following up with E! News correctly, she's working on her next season of Tori & Dean. Has Tori ever wasted her time returning with a lashing of her own? Never. Perhaps she doesn't even give this person and their nastiness an ounce of thought.

Maybe you can relate to this or maybe you even find yourself being Anonymous. My point is, whenever a person find perseverance over obstacles, or happiness in life, someone, somewhere will have an unknown urge to want to bring you down. While they're plotting and obsessing over the next God awful thing to say or do, surround yourself with positivity and optimism. Keep your head up and walk confidently into your dreams. These kind of people will always be found hiding in your shadows. Whenever they decide to step out of it and acknowledge their own beautiful life, is up to them. Us, on the other hand, will keep living our lives without another ounce of thought.

Over the summer, I began to scout out Senior Reps for BELLAJO. This was my first experience with Senior Portraits, so I was both scared and excited about this new venture.

Helena was the first Senior I photographed. We met through her friend, Caitlin, who shared BELLAJO's Senior Rep opportunity with her. ( I LOVE when my clients share!) We chatted over session details, make up looks, celebs and reality TV. All things we can totally relate on because I'm not much older than 18, you know. (; Ha!

Helena chose to share this experience with her mom; something I can definitely appreciate. When the time came to shoot, Helena asked to have her mom in her photographs. Ugh, melt my heart why dontcha?

She was everything I could have asked for. Trendy, bubbly, fun, confident, photogenic and not to mention, GORGEOUS!

Helena was fabulous throughout the session. All the way to the last click. I shot some of my best work with her. Before wrapping up an incredible sesh., I shot this last photo booth set. I know what you're thinking it;

I had a great opportunity to attend an online workshop featuring Tamara Lackey, esteemed Child Photographer, last weekend. It has since changed the way I look at myself, as well as my vision for my business. This past year, I've been settling into my boots (so to speak,) and just trying to figure out my own way around this seemingly over populated pool of fishes alike. Sometimes gaining inspiration from other photographers... Oh, what the heck, gaining A LOT of inspiration from other photographers, that I admire. I've tried a bunch of new things to figure out what I want to shoot and what I'm pretty good at. I think that's pretty normal for the first year or two, right? If you've stuck by me since the beginning, you might have an understanding of the growth my work has progressed into, and for that, a million times, THANK YOU! For sticking by me, supporting me, encouraging me. Every message and comment speaks volumes to my heart.

As I envision my future for BELLAJO, the future never seemed so clear as it does now. Perhaps not crystal clear, but I have a little more understanding of what to expect within this industry. Photography has empowered me to seek dreams that I never thought were possible. I'm no longer afraid to put myself, my work, or my vision to be criticized or critiqued. I want to begin shooting what I love, what expresses my love for life and art, instead of getting in line with the masses. I want to bring a higher quality to my business and simplify it for my clients. I want them to understand that I value their families, as well as my work tremendously.

With that said, my website will be live by the end of this year. I've been making HUGE changes, right down to my logo. You don't know how freeing it was to change my logo! I hope that you are along with me, for what will be the new face of BELLAJO. More modern, chic, simplified and even. more. FUN.

Megan + David | Vintage Retro & Hometown Country.

Megan and David approached me earlier this year for their second Couples Session with me. She and I came with ideas and we planned from there. David, being the awesome guy he is, was along for the ride. Megan was in full on hair and makeup, with the help of her good friend Deborah who designed her hair in retro pin curls. I did a bright red lip and winged liner to fully transform her into a 50's movie star. The transition was seamless.

I love working with Megan and David because they are so easy going and up for anything. They have the kind of love that is transparent yet understated. An energy you can feel just being around them. I can't wait to see what God has in store for their future.

I'm an honored that you chose me for another year of capturing your love as it grows. I wish you both many many more years of love, blessings and health. Happy Anniversary Megan & David.

I won't lie and say that I've got much experience with newbies. But I have so much fun when I get an opportunity to photograph them. I had tons of ideas to try so I was very excited to have this little one in the studio.

Newborn Sessions involve plenty of work and patience, during and post process but when you capture images like this, nothing is more priceless.

Now, whoever said that anyone with a fancy camera could be a Photographer wasn't introduced to the beauty of Post Processing. ;)

It was a chilly Sunday. Praying that the rain would hold off until after our session, I did not anticipate how chilly the wind would be blowing. The Bass siblings tried their best to hang in there despite temperature that brought on the cutest pink noses and the rhythmic shivering.

BELLAJO PINK + 2012 SENIOR GALS.

I stood in front of my dinner table. Packaging material sprawled out in my last minute sprint to wrap my client's package before heading out to a consultation. Glossy white box, silver and pink tissue paper, prints, label, and ribbon... It's a new spool. I gentle remove the plastic wrap and begin to unwind the pretty satin ribbon. Only to find out, "THIS IS NOT BELLAJO PINK!" I could hear my husband chuckle in the background. That's right my friends, I've trademarked a color. Much life Tiffany Blue, there is a BELLAJO Pink. ;)

Also, I am still searching for a few young gals to help represent BELLAJO's senior class of 2012. I thought I'd try out a new venture for this summer to see how it works out. It's rare to have my own family be all willing participants in a photoshoot. Dustin and I found this amazing mural painted by a local artist. I've got to find a rad family who'd love this location as much as I loved it. Until then, I had to stop and photograph it with my own clan. The kids lasted maybe 5 minutes and then they were ready to get in somewhere warm and fed. I was lucky enough to capture a few of the boys. All chinky eyes and mean mugs. I'm sure they get that both from their mom and dad.

I wake up every morning to an abundant amount of sunlight pouring through our blinds. I find it a lot easier to appreciate where we are. We're together, as a family. Healthy, happy and there's not much more than I need.

Editorial spreads really inspire and help me develop a creative eye. Editorial may not be my current style but it's what I'm shooting for in the long run. Granted, I do have a lot to learn. I have tons of clipped images that spark some kind of emotional attachmen that I scrapbook. For reference or inspiration, who knows? I just feel like I need to capture my own interpretation.

This particular image runs dear to my heart because of the obvious reasons. I'm hoping to pick out a hot mama like Christina to help me pull this off. Any takers? :)

The Princess, The Frog & The Skater Boy | Boyles Children Session

I've got to be honest, as much as I loathed having to photograph in a studio, I've had fun playing around with some awesome kiddos in here. To my satisfaction, I was able to get some really beautiful images done indoors. *Whew* Now that the snow is beginning to melt, slowly by slowly, I'm revved up to get outside and tumble around in the grass and dirt (much like some photographic ninja.) Oh yeah, trust me, I get down!

Below are a few of my favorite images taken of the Boyles siblings. Their mother contacted me and upon meeting on our consultation, I found that I have actually met them before. Her son is good friends with mine and has even been over to my home. :)

They are the sweetest kids. I had no problems with them feeling cramped in my home studio. The kids came to work it and to my pleasure, came up with these adorable images that their family can treasure for a lifetime.

Little Emma was a doll! Quiet and soft spoken but she charmed me all the way!

Speaking of "charming..." Her big bro is pretty much a rockstar skater boy in training. He brought along his prized possession; his skate board. That boy worked it like a mini Tony Hawk. I love when my clients bring props that adds to their personality. It just makes these images so much more personal.

If that doesn't say "BAD" (not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good) then I don't know what does!

I really enjoyed the company of their family. These kiddos are truly a beautiful duo.

The best things in life aren't things. | Reeves Family

Upon meeting my clients, I usually send them a pre-consultation form that has a couple of questions to help me understand who my clients are and what they want to achieve during their sessions with me. The one thing that stood out when receiving the form back from the Reeves Family was one line, "I want them to remember how much fun we had." From that single line, I knew that this family had a deep appreciation for life and the importance of their children simply having fun as children. In a world that forces our children to act and appear older, some times we just need to let kids be kids.

Mom has an art studio set up in the basement. She is a very talented artist and it's a good thing that it's rubbing off on her little ones. She came up with this idea of creating a scene of the family painting this canvas that they would later hang in their home. So creative and sentimental. This next image makes my heart melt a little. :)

I always feel lucky when these wonderful families include me in their lives to capture moments that they don't ever want to forget. For the Reeves Family, these images will only prove that their love and adoration for one another will strengthen with time. It's refreshing to see these parents letting their kids have fun. Life is so much happier when you're laughing and smiling.

The Freeman Family; Dressed to impress.

The Freeman Family were very particular with what they wanted to achieve with their images. Once I released the session to them to view for the first time, I received a phone call quickly after. The best client reactions are the ones that tell you that you've exceeded their expectations. It makes me grin from ear to ear. The family is truly beautiful and a laugh to be around. Not to mention the children are gorgeous. I'm so happy to capture the beauty of the Freeman clan.

Last but not least, Chaunte didn't realize how gorgeous she is so I had to show her what she's working with. Her hubby is one lucky guy!

Storm Family; Long overdue.

I've known the Storm Family since I began my business last year. It's been a pleasure to work with them on several occasions. I watched as the children get bigger and older. I've seen them survive a deployment and finally a complete family. It was an honor to be the one to capture their first photographs as a family.

It's been a blessing to have met and gotten to know your family. Thank you for being such faithful and supportive clients as well as friends. I hope nothing but the best as you all venture on to a new place. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Life As We Know It.

It happens to the best of us. We get lost. We lose motivation, drive, passion and we end up walking in circles struggling to figure out what to do next. Thanks to so many talented, kind and supportive people that I've met and some I am blessed enough to call friends and loved ones, I've manage to allow myself to become inspired and passionate again. I think with every step of any learning experience, there are people in your path that are put there to help you. Whatever you do, take the opportunity to accept it. Use it to take you higher and bring along others on your way up. Some people are so afraid of help but it's one of the things that reminds us that in a scary world, there are still kind people out there.

Newly born, Baby Wes.

I had the greatest opportunity to follow this family in their journey of expecting parents to glowing parents of a bouncing baby boy. Baby Wes was just shy of 3 weeks old when I came to visit. His parents and grandparents were present to greet me. This was my very first time with a newborn and I have to admit, I was a little nervous to handle such a fragile little one again. Went down my checklist before I left my house:

Camera Bag - Check.

Props - Check.

Extra clothing - Check!

We didn't make much use of my props, as the family has the best props on hand. An heirloom wooden bowl and grandma's hand crocheted blankie and some other fun vintage and sporty things to put baby in that meant something to the family. I absolutely loved photographing him. Newborns have become my new fav.

So it's been quite awhile since I've blogged! My absents has been followed by some decision making on my part. I had the greatest pleasure to meet another wonderful photographer in my area yesterday which went more awesome than expected. You just never know with a Veteran photographer and a newbie such as myself. She was totally lovely and kind in person and I appreciate the time we got to chit chat. She helped me figure out how to solve some things that I was struggling with right now which I'm very grateful for.

With my first year anniversary approaching this spring and gathering everything that I've learned this year, I've decided to make some personal changes in the direction I've taken BELLAJO. I had the opportunity to dabble in everything from newborns to military homecomings. With that said, I learn a lot about what I'm particularly good at and what I'm not so good at. These changes have always been on my mind since the end of 2010 but I now understand that it's okay to change things around for the better. My motto to myself is to "always put my best foot forward" which will speak the same for my photography. I'm excited to finally have the courage to make this decisions. I hope you will all be too!

After you've booked your session you're probably sweating on what everyone should wear. I'm bringing a new edition to my blog called, you guest it, What to Wear! Here I will putting together outfits to help you dress for your session or inspire a look that you want to portray in your photos. Wardrobe is one of the components in making your family photo look well put together. I want to encourage my clients to step out of the comfortable "uniformed" look and prove that you don't always have to be "matchy matchy." Here's my first look. Perfect for your in-studio or your upcoming spring session.

The easier way that I can help my clients with choosing what to wear for their session is one simple rule: Find one patterned item and pick everyone else's outfits according to the colors in that pattern. :)

You may recognize this couple from my early beginnings. This time, they contacted me to shoot their holiday photos. Decked out in what I call "Sunday's Best" looking oh so snazzy and sharp, we captured some precious moments.

How precious is his hand on his daddy's face?! Kids are masters of spontaneity.

Milestones + Military Homecomings.

Last October I had the honor of tagging along with the Wisener Family as they welcomed home their daddy who was away on a 6 month deployment. Imagine the emotions to be documented in a Military Homecoming. It's been one of the subject that I've been dying to shoot since I began shooting earlier this year. I told myself, one day, I was going to capture that...

And on a cold night in October, right before the Wisener boys birthdays, we traveled to the airport with anticipation in their hearts and excitement in their eyes.

This event was the most memorable and meaningful thus far. I can't lie and say that it's not emotional for me either. It took everything in me to keep my composure in such a joyous occasion, when a troop is reunited with his family. As a military wife and sister, the feelings were all too familiar. I couldn't be more happy for this family. I was able to shake Sgt. Wisener's hand and personally thank him for the sacrifices he's made to keep this country safe.

Every troop deserves to come home to this. I hope to share and help document more Military Homecomings so we can meet these brave men and women with the celebratory welcome home they deserve. I feel incredibly blessed and honored to be included is such an important occasion filled with nothing but happiness and excitement. Thank you again, Wisener Family.

A couple nights ago I sat down with one of my girlfriends and ate the best homemade fresh Tomato and Basil Pizza and sipping delicious peach and strawberry Bellinis. We watched the movie, Eat. Pray. Love. Cocktail dresses and fancy restaurants are no where to be found in my part of the world, so we opted for a Girls Night In. If you haven't seen it already, you must. At one point in the movie, they were discussing what is the one word that describes you. Of course, that had me thinking, --what's MY word?

The word I thought was true to myself was: Inspire. It's such a beautiful word. To inspire. To be inspired. Do I see myself as an inspiration? I would hope and aspire to do so. Do others inspire me? YES, YES, a million times yes! Everyday of my life I feel inspired. I think it fuels me to want to be better and do better.

Although yesterday, I was fortunate enough to have one of those days when "anything that can go wrong, did." And on days like those, it's hard to find the bright side. Nor was it easy to find anything inspiring. Well, this morning I did my usually routine which is : Check my emails, respond to messages, turn on Pandora Radio while I work until 12. The first song that came up was Firework by Katy Perry. Then BOOM...

inspiration.

I think a lot of people these days are looking to put your fire out. Some people often find it harder to celebrate your accomplishments. That's not the type of people that you should surround yourself with. At least, that's not the crowd I want to surround me. Everyone has the potential to reach greatness, I truly believe that. Others may have a more difficult time finding it but searching is worth the treasure you find deep inside yourself. And once you find it, do everything to keep it bursting and bright. Just like fireworks. " 'Cause baby you're a firework, come on, show 'em what you're worth."

So be inspired people! Look to inspire. The more people we can build each other up, the more people we'll have surrounding us if we fall down. I want the type of people that burn brightly color fire inside them to keep close to me. The people that know their worth and find no interest in tearing each other down.

2nd Military Spouse Giveaway Winner.

If you keep up with BELLAJO you'd know that a couple months ago I hosted a 2 part giveaway open to military spouses in my area. 2 lucky ladies were chosen from email entries telling me either their love story or why they thought they deserved a session. This is Jill, my second winner of a Free Glam Session.

Jill is probably the funniest lady that I have had the pleasure of shooting. Her positive energy and high spirits naturally attracts people. I've never laughed so much at a session. Here are a few of my favorites.

Jill isn't your typical Girly Girl but I got so many great shots out of her. When a client and photographer just have that "connection," wonderful images happen.

This last pose was taken as an inside joke between her and her husband. Jill is quite the fisher and talked me into taking my family on a fishing trip before we leave Alaska. I'll just have to find a spot that isn't infested with mosquitos, isn't cold or dirty. Haha. Anyway, when she asked me if I could fit in her Waders as props, I didn't even know what Waders were! Sure enough, I came up with something that was super cute, sexy and fun.

Jill, you can't imagine how much of a pleasure it was to spend a session with you. You were able to let go and have fun, be cute and sexy and in turn, gave us images that were absolutely beautfiul. Your husband is one lucky guy. :)

Quit Monkeying Around.

It's been months since I've last blogged. Not blogging is more odd to me than anything. I've always been one to write how I feel or what I'm thinking or just to share what new things are going on in my life. It's an odd feeling to come back and reintroduce myself to my blog again. "Hey, it's Maxine, remember me?"

Rest assure, I haven't been monkeying around. A lot of my time now is spent in my office working on my next plans to take of the world. Well, maybe not The World, but maybe the photography world. Haha. It's a work in progress. I've worked with so many new and returning clients over these quiet couple months. I've tested some foreign waters to see where my nitch is and where is it not. I took a dive into some studio sessions here at home and they've actually turned out wonderfully. You can view some of that work on my Facebook Page. All I'm really trying to do is figure out what kind of photographer I am and what is special about me and building my brand to reflect that.

As a part of the new look and brand, you've notice a huge change of scenery here on my blog. A designer by the name of Savannah from Heart.Smash Designs created this layout and my new business cards for me. Please be sure to check out her work. She's unbelievably great at what she does and she does it in no time flat!

I've found passion in life that I never knew sat dormant inside of me. Every follower, client, friend and stranger that I come across with enriches my life so much with the experience I have with them. I've taught and prayed to see beauty in people that they may have ignored or lost within themselves. I know many of you may find your way here through my Facebook Page so I'm sure you've heard some details of what I'm doing within my business. Davis Siblings Session + Big Brothers, Little Sisters.

Once upon a time, I was the little sister following around my big brother. I secretly thought he was the coolest person alive. I wanted to be just like him. I tagged along with the boys, skinned my knees, took sibling torture and tried to suck it all up. All for the sake of one day becoming just like him.

When I met the Davis siblings, I was taken back with how much they reminded me of my past. Little Miss C was a girly girl. Wore a cute little pink plaid number. Something I would have worn when I was here age too. By the end of the session her white tights were stained with dirt, but did she care? Of course not! She wasn't afraid to climb a tree or a fence just like her big bro. She was the perfect balance of a Tom Boy and a Girly Girl. I'd say, just like me. ;)

Little Man C was all boy. He was a little shy at first but once he opened up he was as bright as the sun. He was independent and did things on his own right. Little Man C was a leader. Every once in awhile, he would get so caught up in exploring his surroundings then pop in my frame and give me the sweetest smile that any mother would love.

I loved their smiles. The crinkle in Little Miss C's nose made her absolutely huggable.

That smirk would give Tom Cruise a run for his money.

The companionship between an older brother and little sister was something that I could definitely relate to. To this day, I still hope to be like my brother; Brave, Clever, Determined and Strong. That is something that will never leave me. No matter how old we get. :)

Thank you Davis Family for allowing me time with your beautiful little ones. Here's to an endless bond between Big Brother and Little Sister. :)

Fence jumping, jet climbing, railroad hopping boys! My time with the K Boys was hardly "work." Spending time with such awesome kids that loved the camera was more like hanging with little buddies of mine. Little SK and Baby SK were everything I hoped my first Kid Couture Boy Session would be; fun, energetic and easy! The lighting was oh so goood that day. My Huge Announcement!

First of all, I'm going to get frank with my readers. Until last night, my spirit was running low and I was drowning myself in a cocktail of self doubt, fear and loss facing my hiatus in just a couple months. I felt, not only was I losing my husband for the next 6 months, I was losing my business that I've worked tirelessly for. Although, I had every intention to return, I was very worried whether or not I'd be received among my peers and my clients once I returned.

Well, with much faith and prayers for a solution, a miracle happened.

Late yesterday afternoon, we got word that my husband would NOT be leaving. Yes! You read it right! He's not leaving! Which means, I can go without a hiatus and keep working and taking clients! I'm just bursting with happiness and I could not be more grateful for everyone and everything in my life that has kept my spirits high and sent me words of encouragement and support. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone who has followed my progress, "liked" my Facebook Page, sent me messages and comments and ultimately became a blessing in my life. At this moment, I could not be more thankful and humbled. This experience has just cemented the fact that this is what I am destined to do.

I'm so excited to share some great news with you all about my journey!

Last Fall, I purchased my first DSLR camera, a Nikon D60 kit. Shortly after that, I returned it and was blessed to receive a Nikon D300. At that time, I didn't realize my love for Photography. I just knew there were pictures that I wanted to capture of my children and our travels. After learning how to operate my camera properly and studying Photography using every resource I could find out there, I realized my passion for this craft. I wrote up short term and long term goals for myself and tacked them onto a cork board beside my desk. 4 months later, I'm sooooo proud to say, I've accomplished everything on my short term list! I am so dedicated to turning my business into a career. With every choice I make, builds my brand stronger.

Baby On Board!

Newborn Photography can be extremely daunting. Although Anne Geddes makes it look like a piece of cake, I can't help but get a little nervous. I mean, brand new babies are so precious and fragile. I've seen shots where babies are hung on a branch, suspending by cloth, just to achieve "the money shot." I haven't been that confident enough to try it myself. I mean, I'd look at someone crazy if they threw out that idea to me! Not with MY baby!

I came across this article that made me feel a little more easy now. It was written by another photographers who specializes in Newborn Photography. Michelle Haley. Her trick of the trade ensures the safety of the baby first. That makes me feel more comfortable with the idea and maybe have enough guts to try it on my next precious newborn.

Family + Summer Sports.

Summer time is truly beautiful out here (once you get passed all the bugs eating you alive.) The weather is warm with a breeze on most days that calls you out into your yard. If only we were "outdoorsy people" we'd be all over this state. But we've come to understand that summers must be taken advantage of, to get through these long, cold and dark winters. Little Man is on a soccer team that my husband is coaching so that is super fun for the family. On a chill day, it's usually spend on the golf course or driving range. Here a few photos I've snapped during our outings this summer.

There was a time in my life once, when I had but one child. Hard to believe since I've added a couple more after but I still remember...

Your first child is the one that teaches YOU everything. How to become a woman, how to become a mom. I still look at my oldest son now, 7 (almost 8) years later and candidly think, "WOW, I kept him alive for THIS long!" I know it's silly to think of it that way but it's true. He's a healthy, active, intelligent, creative and kind hearted child. So, I'm very proud of that. He taught me to be a woman and I'll always be grateful for that.

I recently had the pleasure of doing my first In Home Session with a precious little one named Baby B. If you knew her name, you'd love it as much as I do. I might have considered it a baby name once upon a time. Perhaps, 2 babies ago...

The thing about your first child is that baby is the apple of mommy and daddy's eye. The sum of two parts that are much more wonderful together than they are separately. There's nothing more beautiful in the world than your first born. Absolutely everything pales in comparison to your child's beauty. Baby B was no exception here. Her parents lovingly adored her. She didn't favor one parent over the other. Once she was in their arms she was happy, safe, content and that's when I was able to capture these photos.

Take moments to breath in her baby breath, kiss her toes, play peek-a-boo, wipe her tears and never ever forget to tell her you love. Because in a blink of an eye, she'll be a teenager! AHHH!

Fifth of July!

I hope everyone had a great Fourth of July also known as America's Birthday! My family and I didn't really do anything special to celebrate. The weather wasn't pretty so BBQing was out of the question. Instead, we ended up having a feast the following day. Better late then never! Okay, I'm no "Food Photographer" but I make up for it in the kitchen. ;)

It was a great way to end a 4 day weekend. With my husband grilling outside, my children playing in the yard and the sun smiling down on us, it's a blessing that I do not take for granted. I'm so thankful that my husband was here to celebrate and spend it with us. I know a lot of other families that don't have that luxury right now so I constantly keep them in my prayers. To the courageous men and women fighting to protect out nation, God Bless you and your families. For WE know that freedom cost the ultimate sacrifice.

If you follow me on Facebook you have already heard that my family and I got to experience a truly proud moment in my husband's career. My husband was promoted to Tech Sergeant the other day and it was our first ceremony that we all were able to attend as a family. Our oldest son had the honor of tacking on his stripes, along with a Chief. I was pretty disappointed that my camera and I were on totally opposite pages and did not speak the same language. Therefore, I wasn't able to capture the moment on stage. Here are a few that I captured of that day. I'm so proud of my husband because it took a lot of studying and dedication to reach that stripe as early in his career as he has. Congrats to the rest of the promos!

David + Megan; God Bless The Broken Road, That Lead Me Straight to You.

The military life is funny some times. Especially when it comes to marriage. Us military couples are well known for our "Shot Gun Wedding." We may not all have had the traditional wedding but I think we can all agree, it's definitely not about the wedding, but about the Marriage.

David and Megan's story is pretty similar, he was getting orders elsewhere and wanted to take his lady with him. They sealed the deal and 3 years later, here they are sitting across from me. Megan's beauty struck me from the beginning. She was the total "Brown Eyed Girl" with gorgeous long brown hair. David, sitting beside her, knew what he had and he cherished it by the way he looked at her and smiled. David came off a little shy but I could tell once he broke out of his shell, he was a fun guy. Much like myself. It's just a matter of warming up to someone.

Our session was postponed for weeks due to the horrible weather we had. God was great on the day we shot. The timing and lighting was wonderfully orchestrated just for the both of them. I've got to give David some credit for being able to change in his truck out of his Blues and ABU's. That, sir, takes skills! Once we all got comfortable with each other, David was able to be comfortable with posing for my camera and Megan was able to break out her "America's Top Model" walk for us. I even broke out the Kissing Tag Game at the end for some fun shots.

Asking For Help?

*Gasp! As in, I don't know what I'm doing?

I'll admit, there is still a lot of information I still need to learn. Certain terms, equipment and How To's still puzzle me. From one photographer to another, do YOU still find yourself a little embarassed to ask another one of our peers? I know I do. As if I should magically know everything already, right? I guess I still feel a little intimidated by Photographer X. Even though I'd love an opportunity to pick their brains because at the end of the day, there's something in their work that I have not learned yet BUT I want to get there. Which comes the question: When you're lost, what's one of the first things you do? Stop and ask for directions. I totally understand why men don't do that now. So to all the men out there, I'm with you on that! Even though it makes all the sense in the world. ;)

I read this today and I heard a little "Amen" in my head.

I've struggled to figure out who I am and what I like all my life. I'd follow trends, begin to walk a path, only to find out the path was not meant for me. I failed at a lot of things. I faced tons of dissapointment, what seemed like unanswered prayers, heartbreaks... I pretty much sucked at life. I was always indecisive and bouncing all over the place with different ideas. I found it hard to focus on just one thing and there was no way that I would potentially accomplish any of my goals functioning that way. It's not until recently that I realized there was always one key component missing: PASSION.

One thing I do have is passion. With passion comes drive, motivation and fulfillment. I'm only passionate about a handful of things in life; my husband, my children, my spirituality, and my work. I realize the only way I thrive, is through something I am truly passionate about.

My Mini Session with My Mini Man.

It's been raining and cold the past week but today the sun decided that she would grace us with her warmth. I took full advantage and got my oldest son dressed up to take a mini session in our backyard. Here's a few I'm sharing with you!

I'm still editing a few more of my favorites. We were literally just shooting for 15 minutes and he gave me tons of pictures to work with. I didn't know he was so photogenic and creative with posing! Now don't be surprised to see this little person showing up to my shoots directing. ;) I'm happy to say that he's artistic, smart and athletic. What can I say? I'm a total mom. I like to gloat about my kids!

Personal Post; Inspiration VS Copy Cats.

If you know me, you know that I love to blog. Once I had 5 blogs going on simultaneously. Ridiculous, I know but they were split into categories! Okay, I can't really justify 5 blogs at the same time but now I'm down to one that I blog regularly, which is this. So welcome! Some times I do blog about personal things. Things to do with my family, travels, new experiences, and yes, even make up! File this one under "Personal Post."

So here's an open ended question: "Where does the line between finding inspiration in someone and becoming a copy cat?" Not just from a photographers standpoint but life in general?

Want my take? Well here it is. I know every idea comes from another's. Whether it's a life you emulate in someone you admire or a shot of another photographers that gets the creative juices flowing. I mean, I do it. But the line for me gets drawn at being obsessive about what the other person does next. That means following each idea, experience, and every detail of that person's life. When I gain inspiration from another, I always take what inspires me but never the idea. It's always my way. BELLAJO Style.
But if you are going to rip someone off then at least give them some kind of recognition! Don't take credit for originality when it wasn't yours to begin with.

For example, take the uber J*. Yes, you all know her. She was a HUGE inspiration for me, personally and with my business. She helped me understand that it was okay to be ME! Yes, it was okay to say silly things, stand out and be the girl straight out of Las Vegas with the big hair, sunglasses and purse (haha), to grow into every quality that I tried to hide. Why? Because being yourself meant being real. I'm loud, I have a potty mouth, I love looking and feeling fabulous, I adore my kids and my husband, I'm creative, silly, weird but likable, heck maybe even lovable! Although J* and I photograph people in totally different places in their lives, I still find inspiration in her work. It may not be evident now but give me some time. Right now, comparing us would be comparing Filet Mignon to Beef Jerky.

What I'm trying to get at here is I'm not living to be like someone else. I don't want to live in someone else's shoes or walk their path. I love mine just fine. Perhaps my experience with this will help you discover that being you is perfectly wonderful because you are perfectly wonderful. My clients will love me, not just my work but for the experience that you have with me. And to me, no one can copy that!

My First Couples Session; Jonathan + Angela.

I was excited to book my first couple's session. Something about capturing intimate moments between two people in love speaks volume to me. It's love in it's simpliest form. Without the distraction of the kids. Just moments between him and her.

Jon and Angela made my first experience so easy. Right off the bat, I adored Angela. Perhaps it was our love for fashion and girliness or maybe because we hailed from the same state. Either way, I immediately got the "Home Girl" vibe with her. She was as sweet as Georgia Ice Tea. Sweet and refreshing! Haha! But I'm totally serious. I felt like I've known her for years.

Jon was quiet at first. He took direction amazingly. For most of the session I kept referring to him as "Ashton Kutcher" because man, could that guy pose! He dressed as if he walked off the pages of GQ Magazine. I mean, if a man leaves a photoshoot to change out the outfit that he brought, you know that guys got style! In the meantime, it gave me a chance to shoot off some glamour shots of Angela.

The woman knew how to work those strappy wedges and limbs!

My favorite moments of the session were capturing Angela between shots when she would smile and giggle.

My camera just loved them front row and center. With an ease of playfulness, grace, charm and confidence, these two just came alive with so many special moments for me to capture. A few times during the session, I felt like I was directing a fashion shoot because they posed with such poise, not to mention dressed uber fabulous. They were perfectly aware of eachother, it made for some beautiful moments with a mix of natural and posed.

Losing Track of What's Important.

Ever since my experience with Escalate, I've really been conscious of remembering what's important and why I chose to take on this career. With a mix of my love for art and passion for this craft, I can also be my own boss and not have to schedule my family around my work, but the other way around. I also need to be more aware of what moments I'm missing within my own family. Ever since I began photographing other families, I failed to keep photographing my own. My three beautiful boys and my handsome husband. We'll never be this age again. We'll never have some of these moments and milestones that I've failed to capture.

I think as you get further and further into the business perhaps it's normal to lose sight of why you started to do this in the beginning. My hope and prayer for myself is to always stay passionate, motivated, and in need of constant growth. I think once you lose those feelings, it turns into a "job" and not a career that you've dreamt of having. Yes, this is me, reminding myself to always. stay. humble.

So I leave you with this.

My husband has picked up a new hobby. When the mister picks up a new hobby I see $$$$ (as in $ coming out of bank). MY oldest son tags along, so for now, I think it's cute.

A Day at The Park With The Storm Family.

In May, I met the Storm family through another one of my clients. With dad away on deployment, Mrs. Storm had her hands full with 3 little ones. You can't help but admire a woman that has the strength to see her husband off to war and still manage to remain sane while he is away. With 3 beautiful children by her side and the support of loving friends around her, I think she has a lot to help keep her going. Meeting her oldest Little C, Little L and Baby H was such a joy. These children reel you in and make you fall in love with them. Little C is quite the stud for such a young man. Knew exactly what to do in front of the camera. He was born to "work it!" Little L, I found quite reserved but something about his quiet charm and getting him to smile so naturally just made my heart sing. And Baby H, the little princess, had the best qualities of both her two older brothers. With big eyes and pouty lips, I don't know how her parents will successfully say "NO" to her.

We all know time has the ability to escape us like a breath of air but in moments when you're holding your breath, time just doesn't seem to come fast enough. For Sgt. Storm, I hope that I was able to capture your beautiful children in a way that makes you happy and loved. Thank you for your service and sacrificing your time, life and your family's lives to serve our country. Please get home safe!

Kid Couture Debut.

So here it is! What I've been so excited about! Perhaps because I don't have a little girl of my own to dress up so going to work and making all these beautiful babies look fabulous just melts my heart! I'm incorporating more glam, vintage and funky inspired things to my prop collection for Kid Couture so it's not stopping here. I still have pieces to add for the little guys as well. This is just the beginning for tons of fun for my kiddy clients as well as myself.

Kid Couture Debuts Tonight!

This session is considered a specialty session for kids to dress up, have fun, and be the rockstar or princess they know they are, (or at least us parents think they are *wink.) I'm sure you've seen the fabulous photographs of girls in tutus and boys in ties and that's basically the premises of what Kid Couture is about. As a lover of fashion and a self proclaimed Fashionista (lol, in my head of course) I wanted to incorporate that with my children sessions to make for more interesting and fun photographs. I want to take dressing up to a whole new level and create a session that will bring out your child's inner diva or stud! We all know our kids are the cutest things in the world. Why not show everyone else?

I am currently working with different designers to create fabulous props to use for Kid Couture. Everything will be glamourous, fabulous, funky, and classic. It's summertime here in Alaska and if you knew anything as a local, you'd know with 8 months of frigid temps of well below zero, once it hits the positives, they're all in shorts and flip flops. I kid you not. I don't think I'll ever get to used to calling summer here "hot" coming from Las Vegas where 120 degrees is the norm but I am taking full advantage of the weather and the sunshine while we have it. Summertime here is actually really beautiful. The grass and greenery that I am so desperately allergic to, compliments the area with vibrance that we lack majority of the year. The wildlife trots through neighborhoods with no regard for cars, children or people in general for that matter. Yes, I will admit, Alaska has got a few things to offer. ;)

So, I've been shooting shooting shooting this month and I've been beyond thankful for the opportunities that have come my way. Not just for my business but meeting these awesome people that come from so many parts of the country. I go into a shoot super nervous and anxious but always come out of each session so humbles, grateful and yes, blessed. Never in my mind, could I have ever conceive that I could do the things that I've done this month. Much less in such a short period of time. In a matter of weeks, I broke out of my shell, taught myself that it was okay to be different, and offered my talent is hopes to touch other people's lives out there. I know that this journey has only begun but I am so hopeful that I will live my life to my fullest potential now that I have found something that I feel so passionately about.

Military Spouse Appreciation Month.

I haven't had much time to typed down a personal entry. I gave that up once I began building my business. But one thing that won't escape me is the fact that I am a proud military wife and that's what my business will be built on. My appreciation for the people that share the same lifestyle as I do. So on to my post. A fellow military spouse blogger, Married to a Sailor, came up with an idea for other bloggers such as myself to let the world know what it means to me, to be a military spouse. Today is the deadline to enter in this contest, so please shoot on over to her blog to enter or to check out other beautifully written entries.

Here's mine.

What it means to ME to be a military spouse.

It means you must stop what you're doing when you hear the National Anthem played on base. I mean, these are things our men should warn us about during our vows. "Hey honey, just so you know, when you hear the National Anthem played at 5:00 on base, stop the car." No, I thank the angry man in another car, shaking his fist at me, for that tidbit of information.

It means that I learn to speak and understand the language of acronyms.

It means that losing my military ID card could be the biggest sin I could ever commit.

It means memorizing his last 4 would be my password to everything I need.

It means moving to an unknown town, getting comfortable, then leaving soon after.

It means making true friendships with other families and having friends in so many different places in the world.

It means never getting comfortable in one place too long.

It means having a love/hate relationship with the military.

It means being a single mom with 3 boys when he's away.

It means getting used to that sinking feeling in your tummy when you get news that he's deploying.

It means thanking God that it's only a TDY.

It means watching him pack for several month at a time.

It means trusting God wholly to take care of him and get him back to me safely.

It means understanding that he may not make it home.

It means holding it together for the kids when they ask for daddy, then breaking down when you're alone.

It means laying in bed with him and breathing in his air, his aroma, and yearning to jump into his skin to be closer to him.

It means memorizing every muscle, scar, bone and contour of his body to get you through the long months apart.

It means saving his shirt he wore the previous night before he left to use as comfort for yourself and your children.

It means taking on full responsibility for your family and household so that he doesn't have anything to worry about.

It means knowing that everything in your life is temporary except the love for your children, your husband and your family.

It means knowing the thrill of the long awaited Homecoming when you can be in your Airmen's arms again.

It means sacrificing your beloved for the freedom of our country.

It means no matter what branch of military, our families play on the same team.

It means all military movies have more meaning to me. I cry during every single one I watch!

It means appreciating the people that stop my husband in public, to thank him for his service.

It means being proud of my country and what all these men and women do to fight for what it stands for.

It means being proud of my husband and being proud to be his wife.

It means lusting over him in his uniform. ;)

It means listening to him vent after work about God knows what but engaging anyway.

It means running our household in military style. The kids say "Yes mom, Yes dad." "Ma'am and Sir." Everything is organized, folded and stowed a certain way.

It means my husband is never one to sit around and watch things happen. He makes things happen.

It means being broken without him but pressing on anyway. It means bringing out strength in myself, that I never though I was capable of.

It means loving him when we're together and loving him when we're apart.

It means loving him across an ocean.

It means being his Wingman.

Destiny.

There's a feeling in my gut that tells me that the path I'm on was set for me way before the idea of becoming a photographer came to me. The love for picture taking was always there, even in childhood. Whether it was getting all dolled up with my old bestie, Tera and taking pictures with an old disposable film camera using hats and flowers as props or spending a day in my cousin's darkroom learning how to develop film, the love was always there. It just took me longer to realize it.

I know that I've been incredibly blessed with a beautiful life despite all the rebellion I did, fighting my way over to the "dark side." Every little decision or prayer unanswered was a way to direct me to this life I live now. I'm just amazed at the grace of God. How gentle he is to let you have your way but uses things to direct you to the ultimate plan for your life; you're destiny.

I know, the post sounds like some sappy love song. I just had to acknowledge that it's only by the grace of God that I've gotten here. My hopes and dreams have turned into reality because of the way that I see life now. Positivity breeds positivity. If you believe what I say to be true, with the help of God, you're hopes and dreams come true too!

Whether a job pays $100 or $1,000,000 the real reward is the feeling that you get when you realize your dream and follow through with it. When you live the life you're destined to live, to me, that's true wealth.

I'm taking a mini break from editing to release my brain fart tension. I am the first one to admit, I can be a teeny tiny bit absent minded at times but it's only because I have a bazillion things on my mind and it all has to be translated from Giberish (my native language, HA!) to English.

I find myself a lot more busy these days but I love every second of fulfilling my passion and finally sharing it with the rest of the world. So far, so good. It's just I find myself a little off in a few areas. Like remembering to call to cancel the oil change or totally overlooking the fact that my 18 month old baby is writing on both my husband's freshly pressed uniforms in bright red marker. Yes, call me a little distracted. Which called for a blog rant. ;)

Wow, that's pretty much it! I was sure that the list would have been longer. I mean, all of these will come in time but it's just fun to dream. I truly believe God will provide everything I need in time. So far, he has.

In other news, I'm excited for this month because there's a workshop going on called Escalate on the 17th and 18th that I'm really looking forward to. I've been dying to attend a workshop but I don't think they have them held where I live. This is the first one that will be streamed live from the internet. The best thing is, it's FREE! Gosh, I love that word. F-R-E-E. Music to my ears. I'm eager to hear from some of the industries top photographers. I'm like a sponge, I'll absorb all the inspiring words to take me off to new heights!

I don't think my portfolio could have kicked off better than beginning with a face like her's. Little M embodies everything a little girl should be; sugar and spice and everything nice. She charmed me right off the bat, with her smile and playfulness. Her love for Curious George and the classic PBS cartoons told me that this little one will grow up to be a classy lady one day. The fact that she is part French and her name was Madeleine, Yes, like the book Madeline, indeed made it seem that way.

My first photoshoot couldn't have went any better. She made my job effortless with a natural tendency to give me a look over one shoulder or look at (or away from) the camera just at the perfect moment. Which makes me wonder if her mommy and daddy have a mini Cindy Crawford on their hands.

Tomorrow will mark the very first offical BELLAJO Photoshoot with a very special little girl and her very special mommy. I have no doubts that I'll be able to catch a beautiful moment with Little M because she's so full of life. My only hope is that I can keep up! I cannot wait to share what we capture with them.

As I'm prepping all my gear and anything else I will possibly need or think I need, I can't help be anxious but moreso excited. This is what I've wanted to do for all these months. This is what I've been studying and practicing. For this moment to show the world what I'm made of.

I just created a flash webpage for potential clientele to view my work, get to know me a little better and see what my whole vision and look is all about. I love flash websites because they're so interactive and stimulating. You can check out my debut here.

For now, I've got 3 consultations scheduled for the end of the week for PBing. I've come up with a couple ideas for each family and will run it by them once we get a chance to meet in person. I can wait to photograph their beautiful children and have a little fun taking pictures together. I'm so excited and a tiny bit nervous to finally get the opportunity to capture other families moments other than my own. It's totally like spreading the love!

I've also decided that I would offer a free session to any deploying or deployed member and their family once a month. I love hearing peoples stories, so if you're interested please email me with a little about your family. It's the least I can do to show my appreciation to our troops. To send them off with beautiful photographs of their loved ones.

Another thing that I wanted to add, if you do have a spouse that is deployed but is scheduled for a homecoming, I am available to tag along and capture those first moments of the reunion. I don't think I can think of anything any more beautiful and meaningful than those moments. It's pretty much up there with a birth of a child and a wedding, in my opinion.

I Finally Did It!

I finally took a chance. Stepped out of the nice and cozy box I build myself when we moved here and did something crazy. I finally put an Ad up. Now, this is a huge deal for me. It was my first opportunity to get my name out there and put my best foot forward. For now, I'm offering my services for a one time free shoot in exchange for the experience and new material I will have to begin building my portfolio. You've got to start somewhere, right?

I'm truly amazed at the response and feedback I've gotten through emails and Facebook from people that don't even know me. I've been busy replying to emails and setting up consults for the week that I'm a feeling a tinged overwhelmed but so eager and excited nonetheless! This is what I've been waiting for. What I've studied and practiced all these months. Opportunities to photograph people and share my talent with them is an incredible feeling. Even if it's free! There is nothing like beat this happy feeling I'm experiencing now. I look forward to all my shoots as if it paid a million bucks. I'm, finally doing what I love, and loving what I do!

I'm pretty excited to announce that I took a step and created a Facebook Fan Page for BELLAJO. It may seem a little unnecessary to some but it really means a lot to me. I'm hopping out of the box that I've been hiding in and debuting my photographs to the entire Facebook community. A lot of other photographers find it a good way to communicate to their clients and prospective clients. Besides this blog, I don't really have any other way of exposing my work to the public.

This is just the very beginning! Although the way I'm going about things is perhaps not conventional to others but I'm making my own way. I'm motivated, focused and ready to share my love for this art with anyone who wants to share it with me!

I hope everyone's Easter was full of Blessings! This is one I took on Easter of my little guys. How do you like the editing? I did something a little different. Brighter and softer. Yay or Nay?

So, it's finally April and I'd like to update on my progress.

Oh wait, there's really nothing to update on. *sigh. I told myself, Once the snow is gone, I'm going to get out there. I'm making it happen! I have yet to make any big moves yet. The good news is, I haven't stopped shooting. I'm still inspired to shoot, I'm just running out of human subject to photograph.

But I think I'm ready. Ready to photograph some interesting and fabulous people! even if it's starts off as PBing. I need to start photographing people!

I'm just not exactly sure how to get my name out there. Do I take an Ad out? Do I stand in front of the BX and pass out my business card? Haha. The biggest problem with me is finding subjects that enjoy this kind of art. But how do you walk into a situation alone with strangers in an unfamiliar place or even their own home? Do I sound a bit paranoid? Perhaps. I do worry about my safety when I'm on location. Especially since I'll be alone and am not familiar with the people and area. If you're a photographer that reads my blog, I'd love to hear your input.

I wish that someone would just give me the step by step instructions on how I to begin. I feel so lost.

I Heart Faces Dessert Recipe Edition.

From time to time I like to enter iheartfaces challenges but I almost ALWAYS miss the deadlines. This time, I just happened to take these series of pictures while I was making dessert the other day. Super easy peasy recipe. Enjoy!
Chocolate Dipped Strawberries.

It's spring, which means my favorite fruit is finally on sale! Head over to your local grocery store and pick up a basket of fresh strawberries. You will also need a bag of chocolate chips, whichever chocolate you prefer. In this case, I used both White Chocolate and Semi Sweet Chocolate chips for dipping. While you're at it, pick up a roll of wax paper and possibly bamboo skewers for the dipping process, especially if the little ones want to help.
Wash and drain strawberries with cold water while keeping the leaves intact. Once drained, set two layers of paper towel onto a plate and place the strawberries on top. This is to ensure your strawberries will be nice and dry before dipping. Set plate in the fridge.

In a double boiler, melt a cup of chocolate or more depending on how many strawberries you're dipping, you can always go back and add more when needed. I found I didn't need more than that. Heat on medium heat. Make sure to keep an eye on it and mix from time to time so they all melt evenly.

When all your chips are melted, it's time to do the dip! Turn the heat off. Pull out those strawberries from the fridge and gently wipe any excess moisture from the strawberries with a paper towel before you dip. To prevent yourself from possibly burning your fingertips while dipping, use the bamboo skewers by sticking the skewer in the center of the top of the leaves. Now you're ready to dip the strawberries in the melted chocolate.

You can get creative and mix both White and Dark Chocolate to create a swirl effect like this. Get creative and make pretty designs because not only is this dessert easy and yummy but it's fun to make too!

Have a plate ready with a liner of wax paper to lay the dipped strawberries on while they harden. To speed up the process, you can stick it in the refrigerator. 30 minutes later, you have delicious chocolate dipped strawberries to enjoy with your loved ones!

Cupcakin' on my 24th.

Yesterday was my 24th birthday and since I celebrated all month, I opted to have a low key shindig at home with my main men. Here are some shots. The cupcakes were knocked off the table shortly after the kids and I finished decorating them. My fault, but it didn't ruin the day. We still dug in and got messy in all the chocolatey goodness. :) We also went sledding but I wasn't too comfortable taking out the camera in the snow much less an icey hill.

Before I forget, I've got to get my hubby more comfortable with the camera. He says he doesn't need to but I beg to differ. There are times like these where I want to be in family pictures too!

The past couple days I've been trying to buckle down so I can get my business up and running. So far, it's be rough. I'm trying to do this all on my own. Learning the ropes. The in's and out's of the business. Some days I just wish that success came easy but that's obviously not going to happen. It still bugs me that I'm stuck in this location when I have the passion to do this and not back home in Vegas. Then again, there's always a reason why things are the way they are. I know big things are in store for me. I can actually feel it in the pit of my stomach. There's so much more to learn and so much room to grow. I just wish it was easier to get the experience and exposure I need. My prayer tonight is for God to send me someone or something to help guide me through these treacherous waters. Until then I'mma be like Dori and "just keep swimming." :)

I love this. When I fall in love with something, someone, I live and breath it. My prayer is to always stay passionate about what I love. To always approach this art as excitedly as I did in my first days shooting. I know this is for me and I'll do whatever it takes to make my dreams a reality. Even if I have to do it alone.

Well, Hello There Old Friend...

Gosh it's been too long since I've shown any love to this blog. Time has already made it's way to March and that's crazy to me because some of my goals need to be accomplished by summer. Like, have my business license, schedule a couple of photo shoots, PB, set packages and prices and begin extensive marketing. Which I've done none of those things yet. :(

What I've been up to while I've been away? Sadly, not much as photography is concerned. I've just been trying to spend time with my family, keeping the house in better shape and keeping my 3 yr. old & 1 yr. old from killing each other. You know, that fabulous mom stuff. It makes me sad that my passion for photography has came to a screeching halt. I'm not even keeping up with my Project 365 anymore. I know, I've been terrible! How do I expect to make things happen when I do nothing to nourish my talent?

You can say that I'm still struggling a little to balance my time during the day. I really should organize my time better so that I can be productive in both business and family. I have got to get it together!

Hiatus.

I've taken some time off from the blogger/inet world do spend more time with my family. I haven't quit on my Project365 but it is on hold for now. The picture above is a picture of my dad holding baby Me when I was first born in my childhood home in Seattle. It may not be an original picture that I took but during the last couple weeks, it was the only picture that mattered to me.

If you don't follow me on Twitter or don't know me personally then you wouldn't know why I took a break for a bit. I lost someone in my family last week and it brought up all these feelings that I had stifled away for the last 10 years. Then on top of that, I got sick and was extremely dehydrated so off to the ER I went. LAME! ;P I'm coming out of my "Emo Phase" now but looking at life in a different perspective.

I'm still going to push through towards my dreams. I'm slowly coming around and studying but have not yet picked up my camera. I don't know why exactly but I hope to soon. A lot of my family has finally come around to acknowledge the talent that I'm developing and it really makes me happy. It really solidifies my decision in becoming a Professional Photographer.

I do have some good news to share!

My wonderful husband will be purchasing my lens for my birthday next month!
I have my first maternity shoot to kick off "Portfolio Building" or PB in a couple months
then a newborn shoot once the baby is born

I'm kind of hoping that I can get in some more PB shoots before then. I want to try and get my name out there so once summer hits I can have a couple clients lined up. :)

Here's to maybe coming back from a hiatus.

Happy Valentines Day everyone!

Looks like I've got some catching up to do! First off, here a few pictures from Project365 that I've been working on. The first 2 were suppose to be entries to I HEART FACES Photo Challenge : Kisses but I was a week late in entering. :( Nevertheless, it gave me reason to shoot some new and more creative material. I had all 3 boys faces covered in red lipstick but at the end of the night but only one of them decided to pose. Of course, it was my Little D! Mommy's Top Model. ;) Isn't he a ham for the camera?!

The next shot was taken yesterday morning. My hubby and I decided to celebrate Valentines Day yesterday because he couldn't wait to give me my surprise. Long story short, I was having an emotional morning already with so many things happening with my family back in Hawaii. I came upstairs to my bedroom, looking for a short solitude crying session and found chocolates, a teddy bear and a note from my hubby sitting on our bed. He always knows how to make things better and easier. I didn't even see the heart shaped diamond necklace until he asked if I like it? "What necklace?" And there it was. He purposely found one that was similar to BELLAJO heart. What an incredible guy. I don't know what I did to deserve such a good man but I'm spend every single Valentines Day for the rest of my life with him.

Next up, and thanks Jenn for reminding me! As you might know, last Friday was my shoot for my husband's Flight photo. It almost didn't even happen! During the week they were having a lot of issues with work so my husband told me the shoot would more than likely be postponed until next Friday. No biggy, that's the military. I text him Friday morning to make sure that it's cancelled and he said "yes." 10:30 rolls around and he calls me basically asking me that if I could be ready by 11:30 to shoot. I KNEW IT! I totally knew that it was going to happen like that!

So a 5 minutes shower, quick change of clothes plus makeup, 2 dressed kids, 1 partially filled gas tank (ugh, dump pump!), 1 butt eating ground in front of 5 people, and an hour later... I make it on time! WHEW! It pretty much went down like, "you tell us where to go/what to do." I had a couple guys move around an engine, tried to arrange them neatly with some hesitation. Haha. Boys! Overall, I was proud that I was more confident in directing than I thought I'd be. Of course, the first thing that came to my mind once I look back and see the pictures is, "What could I have done to make it better." But it was my first, and it didn't turn out too bad. Good news is my husband's boss would like me to come by a couple times a year to shot updated pictures so I will get a chance to redeem myself! Here's what I'll do better next time.

Oh, this picture.

This is the latest of my Project365. I did took my camera outside tonight because it was warmer than usual (about 10-20 degrees.) I used my bulb setting and my on camera flash (ugh that wretched thing!) The sky looked so gorgeous so I wanted to capture how radiant the blues were as they washed along the sky. Instead, I got bright yellow light poles and blown out snow. Too many distractions. Honestly, this picture has so many things wrong with it, I can't tell whether I love it or hate it.

As I'm editing, my hubby looks over my shoulder and compliments this specific photo. He says, "It's pretty. It looks like a painting." And when a photo looks like a painting, in his words, "That's sick!" LOL.

Here's where I ask your feedback. What do you think? Do you see the same thing as me? Or what my husband sees?

Ugh, I'm secretly dying for at least one of the above for my birthday. These are about $200-$500 bucks each so it's likely I'll have to wait longer. I just feel like I'm kind of stuck in my development without the lens. I can never get fast enough exposure and brightness in my photos. Right now I'm using a Nikkor 18-200 f3.5 lens which is an awesome lens for something like landscape. Not really the best for indoor shots of fast moving kids. I didn't know that when I bought my first lens so now I'm debating whether or not to sell it and get the gear I need. It's likely I won't sell but I'm desperate! Har har har.

One day, IF I deserve it, I hope I'll be blessed with enough to expand my gear for the sake of my future business. Until then, beggars can't be choosers! Guess I'll have to make due!

I caught this at dinner tonight. Every time he eats, once he's finished, he flips his plate over, tosses everything onto the floor and plays with the plate or utensil. You would think we'd catch him before that happens! Makes for some cute pictures but a huge mess!

Project 365 is going really well. It's giving me a chance to experiment with all different types of angles and editing. I'm still trying to develop my signature style but I'm starting to think I like a little bit of everything. That's not bad right?

Anyway, I have a series of pictures of Baby T in his crib still left to edit from yesterday. I'll post them once they're ready. :)

These are from my recent 365 posts, which you can find here. Doesn't my son know how to rock out?! He was seriously so into his guitar and giving me this hardcore rocker face it was amazing! He's a natural! All I need to do is be there with my camera, at the right time and place. :)

As for the last 3 of my hubby; I took them earlier today. It was so hard to get him to pose for me. After weeks of asking, I finally got him to model for me. He's been so supportive lately, I feel so much better about everything now. So here it is. The latest of my Project 365.

First Week Complete!

Here's are last two pictures to finish off my first week for Project 365. I'm having so much fun doing this and it gives me so much practice. I'm constantly looking for the next photo of the day so it keeps my mind active and my eyes open. The second picture of my son was taken on the third day of his swollen eye. The doc assured us that it was an allergic reaction. So far we've been giving him his medication twice a day and he's all better now. I call that picture, "SON shine."

Other than that, I wanted to share this awesome news with you guys. If you follow me on Twitter or FB then you already know what I'm going to say but for those of you who don't...

I GOT MY FIRST SHOOT!

Ok, ok, it's not a paid gig but whatever! I'm just excited that I'm actually able to photography someone that's not in my immediate family for a change. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE photographing my family but I really need to get the hang of taking pictures of clients, so this will give me the practice that I need.

So what am I shooting you may ask?

My husband's Flight Photo which will be used as a "Going Away, Remembrance Photo" of all his co-workers. It's presented to them, along with an award, when they get orders to another base. Sort of like a "class photo" I guess. Hehe.

This totally makes me nervous and scared though. I hear that I don't have much time to get the photo that they need, so I've to come prepared. I've got to perfectly adjust my settings, lighting, burst mode and the pose very quickly. And with 20+ military guys (a few being his superiors), all have to keep still and face the same way and be comfortable in from on my camera. AHHH!!! The pressure!

I'm going to his workplace on Monday to scope out the area that they want to be pictured in. I hear that the lighting is pretty crappy and I have yet to purchase a flash. I'm hoping and praying that I can find a place out here (in the middle of nowhere) that rents camera equipment. If you have any flash suggestions please please PLEASE leave them down below! I shoot next Friday so wish me luck!
